Exhibitions Catalogue
Cineworks has long recognized the importance of Exhibition as a means to develop filmmakers, curators and audiences for work created outside of the mainstream system. Our programs have given artists opportunities to show and discuss their work with fellow filmmakers and the general public. They have helped to develop audiences for independent and alternative forms of cinema, providing not just a space for viewing, but also for education. Our exhibitions have also served as an incubation for emerging curators. Our exhibitions cover a variety of genres, but give focus to Canadian artists and the short film format.
Cineworks is currently developing an Exhibitions Catalogue to archive our Curated Programs, Special Exhibitions Series and Community Outreach.
The Catalogue will be organized by year and programs will be available in pdf format.
Curated Programs
Since 1995 Cineworks has been screening programs of short film works curated by our Exhibitions coordinator or an Independent Curator. Highlights include our annual Refuse, Rewind, Replay and NewCineworks events. The program was housed at the late Blinding Light!!! And now takes place at Pacific Cinematheque. We have also curated programs for other organizations.
Special Exhibition Series
The Special Exhibition Series ran annually from 2001-2004 is a thematically based events that combine a screening, salon and workshop. This series addressed the relationship between viewing, discussing and understanding a variety of concepts, genres and cinematic processes. Highlights include "Homage to Stan Brakhage" and "A Sense of Place".
Community Outreach
Along with our inhouse programming Cineworks has been a participant in a variety of festival and events including sponsorship of DOXA, Out on Screen, Reel 2 Real International Film Festival for Youth. Cineworks recognizes the importance of collaboration and we have worked with fellow media and arts organizations to create the Rim Shots Media Arts Festival and the Satellite Short Film Festival.
