REED: The Life and Works of Roy Kiyooka (2011)

by Fumiko Kiyooka

In the Sixties, Roy Kiyooka was a seminal force in the New York School of Painting, his Hard Edge works received critical acclaim until he abandoned painting at the peak of his career. He became a poet in the tradition of the monk Basho, worked with photography and made music. Interviews with his friends reveal some of Roy's philosophies. Michael Ondaatje says Roy".....was like a reed, receptive to every nuance in you."

REED is the story of the extraordinary Japanese Canadian artist Roy Kiyooka told by his daughter Fumiko. Documenting the radical times in which Kiyooka was living, from the beat era to the turmoil of the sixties and redress in the 1980's, this film combines art with the social history that inspired it.
