Thought on Film X

October 29 2008

MONTHLY READING + DISCUSSION GROUP EXPLORING CINEMA + CINEMATIC PRACTICE THROUGH WRITTEN WORDS

A monthly reading + discussion group, Thought on Film aims to promote critical thought around film product and practice through community-based discussion. Rooted in our membership but open to the public, Thought on Film fosters the close reading of texts confronting issues in contemporary, cutting-edge cinematic practice and philosophy.

October’s meeting will feature a screening of Lisa Steele + Kim Tomczak’s Blood Records: written and annotated. A haunting tale of disease and loss, the work infuses the irrevocably sad memories of a girl, who rests in a sanatorium sick with tuberculosis, with a hope only possible through survival. Struggling to escape her diseased body, her spirit roams freely throughout the long days and nights, reminiscing about her family, fearful of the fate of a beloved older brother who is fighting in The War, missing her native language (French) which is now foreign to her tongue after two years in the English hospital and idolizing the handsome but distant war correspondent who has just been admitted. To follow, we will read Mike Hoolbooms Mourning Pictures, an eloquent take on the film that encourages a close reading of the work itself through self-reflection and historical memory.

Experimenting with the form of reading groups and their discussions, this month’s selection will be read out loud by participants. No pre-reading required!
