MONTHLY READING + DISCUSSION GROUP EXPLORING CINEMA + CINEMATIC PRACTICE THROUGH WRITTEN WORDS

A monthly reading + discussion group, Thought on Film aims to promote critical thought around film product and practice through community-based discussion. Open to the public, Thought on Film fosters the close reading of texts confronting issues in contemporary, cutting-edge cinematic practice and philosophy.

In anticipation of Cineworks's SWARM exhibition, Moveable City, July's meeting will feature Maurice Merleau-Ponty's “The Intertwining – The Chiasm,” the last and incomplete chapter from The Visible and the Invisible written before his death. Moveable City is an exhibition that seeks to bring into reflection the layers of our subjective experience when moving in and through the built environment. The exhibition is interested in prying open the strait between perception and imagination by asking us to recognize the constant potentiality of time and place to become something radically transformed. With this in mind, we will be looking at the work of Merleau-Ponty whose thoughts on perception eventually culminated in his concept of “Chiasm” or flesh, which is the crossing over between subjective experience and objective existence. Merleau-Ponty asks us to consider our bodies as both part of the tangible world as well as the world through which we perceive the tangible things that lay beyond our bodies.

Experimenting with the form of reading groups and their discussions, this month’s selection will be read out loud by participants. No pre-reading required!
