Applying Dramatic Structure to Documentary Film

Events  |

The second lecture in a series, this seminar will cover the principles that lie behind dramatic three-act structure and uses examples such as Capturing the Friedmans to examine how these principles can be applied to documentary film.
Topics discussed include the nature and movement of dramatic acts, how dramatic units are combined to define the total structure, the different functions of major turning points and how character development and conflict carry viewers inescapably from start to finish. The emphasis will be on the practical and the seminar will outline an easily grasped method for filmmakers to use in moving from a basic three-act documentary structure.

Instructor: Don White has been a writer, director, producer, consultant, mentor, and teacher for over thirty years in the documentary film and video industries. He has written and/or directed drama, corporate, and major educational documentaries and has won over 20 international awards for film and video production. Numerous films on which he has consulted or workshopped have been broadcast on national and international television and many have garnered major awards.

Optical Allusions

Exhibitions  |

Curated by cheyanne turions.

A nearly gone technology, optical printers once dominated the field of special effects in film, yielding such classic examples as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Star Wars. Today, optical printers have been embraced in experimental realms. This screening will present a number of works from local, national and international media artists whose film work has been manipulated using optical printers. With one of the few optical printers around and available to artists, Cineworks is proud to present this special event to preface to an upcoming workshop exploring introductory optical printer techniques for the experimental filmmaker.

Thought on Film 1

MONTHLY READING + DISCUSSION GROUP EXPLORING CINEMA + CINEMATIC PRACTICE THROUGH WRITTEN WORDS

Beginning in January, Cineworks will play host to Thought on Film. A monthly discussion + reading group, Thought on Film aims to promote critical thought around film product and practice through community-based discussion. Rooted in our membership but open to the public, Thought on Film will foster the close reading of texts confronting issues in contemporary, cutting-edge cinematic practice and philosophy.

But first, we will begin at a beginning. The initial text will be a selection from Gilles Deleuze's Cinema 1. Deleuze was the first major philosopher to take on cinema, and so we begin our conversation by taking on him. Composed of Deleuze's three theses on the movement-image, the first chapter from Cinema 1 is just a small beginning. Deleuze is not a simple thinker, but in our coming together, bit by bit, the sense of his words will have no choice but to surrender. Perhaps. Bring ideas about your own cinematic practice and see what Deleuze's ideas look like up against them.

Come out! And please do bring your friends who have cinematic, philosophical or literary bents.

If you should experience any difficulty locating Deleuze's Cinema 1 [a very real possibility] or if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Programs Manager cheyanne turions at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
