CINEMATIC STAGECRAFT SERIES: PICTORIAL ZONES
Film design is both practical and conceptual. This workshop takes you through the intuitive and methodical processes of production design, exploring locations, floor plans, and concept drawings. Using reading skills, analysis and application, we will cover methods and principles that can be used for any scale of project. Participants may want to use the session as an opportunity for pre-production planning for a project already in development. The following week’s workshop “Chroma and Action Mapping” is recommended as a complimentary session in the Cinematic Stagecraft Series.
In this five hour workshop participants learn how to:
*Do location surveys* Make good location documentation*Draw accurate and useful floor plans* Get the most out of locations as working sets* Develop studio sets* Make informative concept drawings

Instructor: LISA CELOTTO is a filmmaker and teacher who has coached the design and staging of over 300 short dramatic films as a teacher at VFS, Canadian College, and Langara. Lisa has producing, writing, sound mixing, art direction and production design screen credits and has been teaching new filmmakers for 14 years. Working with new filmmakers always offers a unique perspective to the art of filmmaking because each step of the process is invented and discovered as the medium changes.

THE FOUND FOOTAGE FILM
Frightened by the blank canvas of film? Want to make a film but have no money? There are lots of good reasons to make a found footage film, and lots of found footage waiting for you to edit into a meaningful cinematic experience. In an age where the cultural landscape is dominated by a seemingly arbitrary volume of images, what could be more relevant than an entire genre dedicated to selecting and organizing moving images? This workshop will introduce people conceptually and practically to the Found Footage Film. In the morning you will be introduced to this fascinating genre through screenings and discussion. In the afternoon, working alone or collaboratively, everyone will begin creating a scene or short film by editing found footage. Then at the end of our day, we’ll screen your works together and discuss the cuts you’ve made.
The workshop is intentionally small for one-on-one time with the instructor and the equipment. And if you don’t quite finish your piece, not to worry! You will have access to the equipment at the Annex space for FREE for ONE WEEK as part of the cost of the workshop. Through the week, you can finish your film at your own leisure or re-edit it after you’ve had some feedback.

Instructor: SHARON KAHANOFF is a filmmaker, artist, writer and educator. Her works have been exhibited in both cinemas and galleries locally and in the U.S., and she has been published in exhibition catalogues, art magazines and other art publications. She is a sessional instructor at Simon Fraser and Emily Carr Universities, and a board member at Artspeak gallery.

Using reading skills, analysis and application, we will cover methods and principles that can be used for any scale of project. Participants may want to use the session as an opportunity for pre-production planning for a project already in development. CINEMATOGRAPHY: CAMERA DYNAMICS
Choosing the right camera for the job can be daunting, especially because one camera can’t do absolutely everything you want it to. HD vs 4K? RED vs 7D? How can you get the most out of film cameras like the Bolex 16 mm or the Arri 35 mm BL4? This workshop covers some of the primary considerations when choosing camera formats or manufacturers.
Participants will get a hands-on overview of a number of these formats from both the perspective of creative image making and production feasibility. Basic principals of latitude, resolution and colour space will be touched on before lighting a simple scenario for the purposes of testing. Each format will subsequently be ingested into Final Cut for critical evaluation. Participants will be invited to assist in the lighting and shooting of these tests and be encouraged to bring their own creative inquiry to bear on proceedings.
This workshop will be equally suitable to those interested in an introductory overview to current trends in cinematography or producers/directors who are considering particular formats for upcoming projects.

Instructor: BRIAN JOHNSON has received numerous awards and accolades for his work as a cinematographer and as a director. His short films, including Cascadia and the half hour documentary Water Witch, have been included in competition in numerous festivals such as the Clairmont - Ferrand International Short Film Festival. He has won two Golden Sheaf awards and a Leo for his work as a cinematographer, and has shot a number of feature films including On the Corner and The Delicate Art of Parking. Brian has recently completed two projects of his own, The Soft Revolution and (Post) Modern Times. Both of these projects are typical of his current field of work, which challenges the traditional parameters of filmmaking by inviting immediacy and improvisation into the cinematic experience.
