WORKSHOP - MANUFACTURING THE FRAGILE IMAGE: HANDMADE EMULSION AND THE HAND-CRANKED CONTACT PRINTER

Manufacturing the Fragile Image is an intermediate two day hands-on workshop that will teach participants how to manufacture their own black and white 16mm movie film from scratch using only raw chemistry and clear plastic. Participants will then learn how to make a 16mm print onto their new handmade film by collectively building a hand-cranked contact printer, a primitive machine built from common 16mm editing supplies. Workshop time will be split with one day mixing the emulsion and applying it to 16mm clear leader while a second day will be spent building the homemade contact printer and making prints onto the newly manufactured film.  Images made onto homemade emulsion yield beautiful imperfections - it’s these imperfections that we’re looking to exploit and celebrate.  As this is an intermediate workshop, it is highly recommended that participants bring their own images to work with in either negative or positive form.  All other workshop materials will be provided by Cineworks and are included in the cost of the workshop.

Instructor:  For the past decade, film artist cj brabant has explored the regeneration and reformatting of the small-gauge film image. Working to make the familiar unfamiliar, brabant creates visual abstractions that yield the unseen and unfelt by means of mechanical and DIY processes that fracture, disassemble, and reassemble isolated moments. cj's film work continues to screen internationally, most recently with his 35mm work "the fall".

FILMMAKING SEMINAR: PENELOPE BUITENHUIS IN CONVERSATION ON ‘A WAKE’

Cinematic Salons  |  Events  |  Featured  |

Recently returned Vancouverite Penelope Buitenhuis’ new feature A Wake opens at the Fifth Ave Cinemas from April 29th - May 5.  This intriguing, darkly comic film follows a troupe of actors who reunite for the wake of their eccentric theatre director (Nicholas Campbell).  All hell breaks loose over the weekend when old rivalries erupt and secrets and lies are exposed.  Featuring a superb ensemble cast, with a carefully woven Shakespearean subtext, A Wake takes you on a visceral ride that will engage your thoughts long after you’ve left the theatre.

Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society will host an informal discussion in the studio about the filmmaking process of A Wake led by Writer/Director Penelope Buitenhuis in conversation with fellow filmmaker Katrin Bowen (Amazon Falls). The dialogue for A Wake is entirely improvised by the actors, yet there are no long rambling conversations, the dialogue is tight, the story complex. Made for a low budget, it was shot in ten days.  The film has garnered acclaim in the press and at festivals, including Best Feature at the Carmel Arts and Film Festival 2010, Best Film at the Female Eye Festival in 2010 and a nomination for a DGC award for directing and editing.  Showing clips from the film, Penelope will discuss topics including acting, story, casting, shooting, lighting, crew, and music. WORKSHOP - INTRODUCTION TO THE ARRIFLEX 35 mm BL4: THE FILM CAMERA FOR THE INDEPENDENT FILMMAKER

Featured  |  Workshops  |  Directing  |

This introduction to the Arriflex 35mm BL4 is an orientation to the 35mm camera system available at Cineworks to members and non-members.  Workshop participants will leave this introduction competent enough to shoot on their own using the 35mm film equipment. Topics include loading and unloading film, cleaning and threading the gate, shutter adjustments, speed control, lens handling and the use of accessories.  Workshop participants should have some previous experience determining exposure, either photographic, digital or video, as lighting will not be covered in the context of the workshop. While we will touch on many of a camera assistant's responsibilities, this orientation is intended for those working independently as well as artists who would like to use the 35mm medium.  Accessories and some studio lighting will be available - bring your own ideas and questions!
