Workshop: The Super-8 Superlab

In this 3-part workshop, participants will take part in every stage of Super-8 film, including shooting, developing, and screening.  Day 1 focuses on how to use a common thrift-store Super8 camera, including camera speeds, exposures, single-framing (animation), in-camera editing, and an intro to B/W film, with hands-on collaborative film shooting.  Day 2 focuses on processing your own B/W Super-8 movie film, with hands-on developing trials in our Annex darkroom.  Film will be transferred by Cineworks’ telecine transfer service, and on Day 3, participants will be able to focus on editing and exhibition possibilities, including an overview of Final Cut Pro capabilities, sound, and different methods of presenting the film.  This workshop is open to anyone who has ever been curious about Super-8, or those who have had a Super-8 camera kicking around and want to make films!

Instructor: For the past decade, film artist cj brabant has explored the regeneration and reformatting of the small-gauge film image. Working to make the familiar unfamiliar, brabant creates visual abstractions that yield the unseen and unfelt by means of mechanical and DIY processes that fracture, disassemble, and reassemble isolated moments. cj's film work continues to screen internationally, most recently with his 35mm work "the fall".

WORKSHOP DATES:
