Beyond Cartoons – Animating the Personal
November 14 2006
Independent Animation From Canada and Beyond Curated by Toronto artist and animator Patrick Jenkins.
Animation has permeated popular media culture in an unprecedented way, becoming part of our common experience. The power of animation is that it harnesses the imaginative tools of the visual arts in conjunction with motion picture technology and cinematic language to create a totally unique world or “…an emanation of pure imagination.” – Piotr Dumala
Beyond Cartoons presents a selection of some of the most impressive Canadian and International independent animation from the last decade or more, representing an array of personal explorations. Meditations on spirituality, anxiety, voyeurism, a nightmarish coming of age story and portrayals of life’s little absurdities are just a few of the subjects excavated in this program and this potent medium.
Patrick Jenkins will be in attendance to present the screening and prior to the program we will be hosting the Vancouver premiere of his most recent film, “The Skateboarder.”
