Further Information and Call the Action about the BC Culture Cuts

September 15 2009

The need for action in response to the BC Liberals' cuts to culture IS NOT OVER. As producers + consumers of arts + culture, we need to be the squeaky wheel of shame and put pressure on our government, provincial and national, Liberal and otherwise, to seriously consider the consequences for this province and for Canada if these cuts are approved.

The budget that includes these cuts will be debated in the legislature in mid-November. It is ABSOLUTELY VITAL that we keep on making a noise until then.

These cuts from gaming revenues are not just to arts, but to sports teams, parent teacher associations and even libraries. Libraries!!!

An amazing effort by an amazing team of artists to encourage action against the recent BC Liberal cuts to arts + culture.

See their PSA here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rtI3NPa9jE

See here for the responses of some prominent British Columbians to the arts cuts.

Here are some assembled quotes from authors speaking out about it.

Even The Economist, The Economist!!!, thinks there is something strange going on here.

A stunning data visualization of the cuts, all the data coming from the Liberal website.

Coverage from the 09/09/09 arts rally in The Province.

It is also really important to remember that the arts are facing another attack form the provincial governement because funding to the BC Arts Council has already been decimated by an across the board cut of 40%. It seems as though the provincial governement is getting out of supporting arts + culture and I encourage you to imagine living in a province where arts + culture are not valued. If this is NOT a world you want to live in, TAKE ACTION!

Here are some things you can do:

-Write a letter to Preimer Gordon Campbell [(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)], Housing Minister Rich Coleman [(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)], Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts Kevin Krueger [(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)] and you own MLA, whose contact information can be found here. If you'd prefer to fax any of these folks, stop by the Cineworks office and use our fax machine. You can also write them paper letters, and their mailing addresses can be found here

-Get your friends to write letters as concerned citizens, business owners, voters and cultural consumers.

-Make a PSA about the effects these cuts will have if not reversed. And then, make it viral.

-Engage in dialogue with everyone you can about what arts + culture mean to you, and about the merits of governmental policy supportof arts + culture.

-MAKE A NOISE!!!
