Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society, The Documentary Organization of Canada–BC Chapter, Praxis Centre for Screenwriters and Women in Film + Television Vancouver, in conjunction with the Vancouver International Film Festival, present the 15th annual Meet the Filmmakers.
These insightful and informal discussions with artists attending the Vancouver International Film festival provide a rare opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue with the creative visionaries of modern cinema. Salons are FREE–just bring your love of film and prepare to be inspired!
All salons are FREE and take place at the CINEWORKS STUDIO with street entrance through the Pacific Cinémathèque at 1131 HOWE.
THE ARTFUL DOC

Panelists: MICHÈLE HOZER of Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glen Gould and MURRAY GRIGOR of Infinite Space: The Architecture of John Lautner
Moderator: MICHAELIN MCDERMOTT
In arts and culture documentaries, the subject dictates the style. These filmmakers will discuss the strategies and challenges of mitigating cinematic convention and fidelity to the character of the artists that inspired their films.

Noted American film critic [and former VIFF programming consultant] Gerald Peary has crafted an extremely entertaining and informative document–the first of its kind–tracing the history of American film criticism with his film For the Love of Movies: The Story of American Film Criticism. Local filmmaker, artist, writer and educator Sharon Kahanoff engages Peary in a conversation about criticism past, present and future.
TRIMPIN + PETER ESMONDE in conversation with JEAN ROUTHIER

Recipient of a MacArthur "Genius" award and many other accolades, artist / inventor / engineer / composer Trimpin creates, designs, builds and writes music for wild “electro-mechanical orchestras that play themselves.” Peter Esmonde’s enchanting documentary Trimpin: The Sound of Invention not only allows viewers to delight in these ingenious contraptions and sprawling installations, but also to witness the elation that Trimpin's unique sonic explorations and kinetic investigations inspire. Local sound artist Jean Routhier engages artist/inventor Trimpin and producer/director Esmonde in a conversation about the creative process.
VIC SARIN in conversation with MICHAEL BOUCHER

The gorgeous Irish coast serves as a backdrop to skilled director Vic Sarin's latest cinematic endeavour A Shine of Rainbows. Sarin's strong background in cinematography is evident in this stunningly rendered story of acceptance, kindness and the healing power of love, which is screening at the festival’s opening gala. Join Michael Boucher, Program Manager at Praxis Centre for Screenwriters, and Sarin for a discussion about the challenges and craft of character-based writing.
PETR LOM in conversation with MOHAMMAD SALEMY

The Iranian habit of writing letters to President Ahmadinejad is the focus of Petr Lom’s revelatory documentary Letters to the President. Local artist, curator, writer and activist Mohammad Salemy engages Lom in discussion about politics, propaganda and the possibilities for personal response in Iran.

Moderator: SALLY AITKEN
Punching the Clown is a fictional film built around a real-life comedian and musician, Henry Phillips. Mixing scripted comedy and live performances... Filmmakers Gregori Viens (director/co-writer) and Henry Phillips (co-writer/star/composer) have broken all convention in their unique hybrid and captured half-a-dozen awards on the festival circuit along the way. The filmmakers will be in conversation (and comedy) about pushing form and boundaries in film. Is there a line? Does it matter?

Join Marilyn Thomas [producer] and Kate Kroll [director] for a discussion about their film Shi-Shi Etko and the challenges of writing and directing a cultural film for mainstream audiences. Shi-Shi Etko tells the story of a young girl and the last four days before she is sent to residential school.

Esterhazy's dark and captivating first feature, Black Field, blends early western Canadian history into an intense story about the necessity of love for survival. Bottaro’s sophisticated comedy, Queen to Play, celebrates the life of the mind through the lens of chess. Local writer and filmmaker Kat Montagu engages these first time directors in a conversation about the challenges and rewards of taking cinematic charge.
