PROJECT8 FILM FESTIVAL: A Celebration of Super-8 Filmmaking

The Project8 Film Festival returns for a third year presenting eclectic celluloid works made through the yearly workshop series, the Super8 Boot Camp. This year, a second night will showcase recent international works made with super-8 film. Highlights include an alien-battling princess, film noir drag, surrealist alchemistry, science-fiction, retro queer, a cat lady, logic that exists only in dreams, a documentary about the mental health action committee, spidery aerial silks, suspension hooks, rites of spring, blushing, robots in love, empty shelters, post-colonialism, an homage to the Brothers Quay, a gentle family portrait, and schoolyard horror.

The Project8 Collective is a group of small-format filmmakers with an interest in developing our local film community by presenting an alternative to the mainstream narrative production industry. The Project8 Collective reinvigorates an old film making practice by providing super-8mm film workshops, the Super8 Boot Camp, at Cineworks and The Purple Thistle. By mentoring low income artists from various backgrounds and creating access for those who wouldn't otherwise have it, the process fosters an array of film works that borrow widely from diverse genres. Celebrating the DIY movement of celluloid, participating artists have developed, shot, edited and hand-processed their films, learning that compelling films can be made without labs and expensive equipment. By fostering a culture of producers and viewers who take the medium of film into their own hands, freer creative expression is encouraged in a fellowship of collaboration, skill sharing and support.

Featuring world premieres by these 2008 Boot Camp participants: Aidan & Cara Farrell, Aili Meutzner, Amanda Ruckus, Amber Dawn, Amy Lynn Kazymerchyk, David C. Jones, Eli Schreyer, Jen Crothers, Jesse Blanchard, Jillian Deri, Kathleen Gowman, Lisa G.
