January 28 2012 - 12:00 PM
Workshop: The Super-8 Superlab

In this 3-part workshop, participants will take part in every stage of Super-8 film, including shooting, developing, and screening.  Day 1 focuses on how to use a common thrift-store Super8 camera, including camera speeds, exposures, single-framing (animation), in-camera editing, and an intro to B/W film, with hands-on collaborative film shooting.  Day 2 focuses on processing your own B/W Super-8 movie film, with hands-on developing trials in our Annex darkroom.  Film will be transferred by Cineworks’ telecine transfer service, and on Day 3, participants will be able to focus on editing and exhibition possibilities, including an overview of Final Cut Pro capabilities, sound, and different methods of presenting the film.  This workshop is open to anyone who has ever been curious about Super-8, or those who have had a Super-8 camera kicking around and want to make films!

Instructor: For the past decade, film artist cj brabant has explored the regeneration and reformatting of the small-gauge film image. WORKSHOP - SONIC FINGERPRINTS: CAPTURING LOCATION SOUND FOR FILM

SONIC FINGERPRINTS: CAPTURING LOCATION SOUND FOR FILM

So many filmmakers spend time, money and effort getting beautiful pictures, but if the sound doesn’t match the quality of the images, it can severely detract from the impact of the finished film. Sound is half of what film’s sensorial experience can be, so our goal is to make it the half that counts.  This full day workshop aims to provide filmmakers with the means to capture great audio that helps them to build a soundtrack of depth and clarity, and defines the aural identity of their own unique vision. Utilizing Cineworks digital audio equipment, we will explore the pitfalls of recording sound on location, as well as practicing microphone techniques and good methods for competent acquisition. We will also have some fun creating simple yet effective sound effects.  Bring your ears!

WORKSHOP - MANUFACTURING THE FRAGILE IMAGE: HANDMADE EMULSION AND THE HAND-CRANKED CONTACT PRINTER

Manufacturing the Fragile Image is an intermediate two day hands-on workshop that will teach participants how to manufacture their own black and white 16mm movie film from scratch using only raw chemistry and clear plastic. Participants will then learn how to make a 16mm print onto their new handmade film by collectively building a hand-cranked contact printer, a primitive machine built from common 16mm editing supplies. Workshop time will be split with one day mixing the emulsion and applying it to 16mm clear leader while a second day will be spent building the homemade contact printer and making prints onto the newly manufactured film.  Images made onto homemade emulsion yield beautiful imperfections - it’s these imperfections that we’re looking to exploit and celebrate.  As this is an intermediate workshop, it is highly recommended that participants bring their own images to work with in either negative or positive form.  All other workshop materials will be provided by Cineworks and are included in the cost of the workshop.

THE MOVEMENT IS THE MESSAGE: A 2-DAY DANCE FILM PRACTICUM

Most dance films try to film dance made for the stage.  This fails, since stage dance flows from only one angle, while film cuts life into shots from different angles.  To make real dance film, choreographers must understand film composition and directors must understand the textures and rhythms of dance.  It requires choreographing shot-by-shot, with "sticky ends", non-stage locations, camera angles, camera movement, and montage.

This workshop is ideal for filmmakers, choreographers, and dancers who want to make dance film, and for artists who want to exercise their visual imaginations.

Daniel Conrad's ten dance films have screened at scores of international festivals, garnering a wealth of prizes; have been broadcast by PBS, CBC, ZDF (Germany), TVE (Spain), ARTV, Ovation and Bravo; were featured at the Portland Art Museum series Icons, Rebels and Visionaries, and were purchased by the National Gallery of Art, Wash, D.C.

DATES: Feb 12-13 2011, 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.

LOCATION: Perform Art Studios, 111- 260 West Esplanade, North Vancouver (2 blocks from the Seabus)

COST: Cineworks Members - $170 (+HST), Non-Members $200 (+HST), includes cameras, lighting, and dancers

Bodies in Motion, Bodies at Rest

A DANCE FILM WORKSHOP WITH DANIEL CONRAD - REGISTRATION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MAY 21st!

Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society and the Dance Centre present a full-day workshop for filmmakers, choreographers, and dancers who want to make dance film; and for any artists who want to exercise their visual imaginations.

Most dance films try to film dance choreographed for stage. This usually fails, since dance has vastly different needs than film. Film cuts the world into angles, while dance is conceived as a continuum from a single angle. Also, time and space become more compressed on film than on stage. To make true dance film, choreographers must understand film composition and directors must understand the nature and rhythms of dance. Going from stage to screen starts with choreographing and lighting shot-by-shot, with “sticky ends,” and it continues with non-stage locations, camera angles, camera movement, and kinetic montage. We will study these core methods, watch films and film clips which use them well, and then practice extensively with camera, lights and a dancer.

Instructor DANIEL CONRAD’s ten dance films have screened at Locarno, Montréal World, London Int'l, Valladolid, Seattle Int. (Best of Fest Shorts), New York Dance on Camera (2 Silver Awards), Golden Prague (Dagmar & Vaclav Havel Prize), Toronto Moving Pictures (Audience Choice Award), Dance Camera West (L.A.), Vancouver Int., Northwest Film & Video (Judge’s selection); sold to PBS, CBC, ZDF, TVE, ARTV, & Bravo; featured at the Portland Art Museum's series: Icons, Rebels and Visionaries; and purchased by the National Gallery of Art, Wash., D.C.

16mm Orientation + Dogma Workshop

The task of making a film on celluloid can seem overwhelming and intimidating, given the amount of equipment to master, along with high lab costs. Cineworks’s 16mm Bolex Orientation + Dogma Workshop is an opportunity to make a short film on the very cheap. While allowing first-time filmmakers to try their hand at filmmaking at an affordable cost, this orientation workshop will also challenge experienced filmmakers by taking away some of their favourite tools [post-production editing and effects, for instance], while introducing them to new tools [the medium of celluloid and film cameras]. This is a chance to participate in a creative activity with a community of filmmakers where the expansion of your practice is key. This workshop fulfills both Cineworks’s mandates regarding our education program: to teach our membership how to use the gear and resources we offer, while also stoking your creativity as a filmmaker.

Participants will be oriented to use the 16mm Bolex camera and will then be provided with a roll of 16mm film, a Bolex camera and a light meter and will have 24 hours to shoot a film. The film will be developed and presented as part of a group screening of works produced through the workshop.

RULES

  • You must complete and submit to the Cineworks office the 16mm Bolex Orientation and Dogma Workshop application form when you register for the workshop with our Office Manager + Member Services Coordinator Leanne. The Cineworks office is open Monday-Friday, Noon-6pm.
  • If you are unable to register in person, please contact Programs Manager + Curator cheyanne turions at cheyanne(at)cineworks.ca for an electronic copy of the application form. The completed application form and registration can be submitted to Leanne electronically at info(at)cineworks.ca or by phone at 604.685.3841.
  • The workshop will take place on Saturday, 24 April, 10am-6pm.
  • The available shooting dates are 01-30 May 2010.
  • The exact date of your shoot will be your choice, subject to availability of equipment. You must book the equipment with Jurgen, Cineworks’s Equipment Coordinator, at equipment(at)cineworks.ca or 604.685.2209. Please note that the booking is not confirmed until you have heard back from Jurgen. Please also clearly indicate that you are participating in the Dogma Workshop.
  • You will get the following equipment and materials:
    1. One Bolex 16mm camera
    2. One Sekonic incident light metre
    3. One 100 foot roll of 16mm colour 500 daylight film stock
  • You have this equipment for 24 hours, after which you must return the equipment and hand in the roll of film for processing.
  • According the original Dogma 95 rules:
    1. Shooting must be done on location. Props and sets are not permitted. If a certain prop is needed, then the location of the shoot has to be where the prop would naturally be.
    2. The camera must be hand-held at all times.
    3. You may only use available light.
    4. You may only do in-camera editing.
    5. You may not do any post-production work whatsoever [no editing, no sound, no cuts, no dissolves et cetera].
    6. The film must not contain superficial action, ie: murder and use of weapons is not allowed.
    7. The film must take place in the present.
  • Unlike, the original Dogma 95 rules:
    1. Please note that these films will be silent.
    2. Genre films are acceptable.
    3. The film format will be 16mm.
    4. The director can be credited.
  • You must show the following credits at some point in your film: a] the words: Produced with the generous support of Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society and the National Film Board of Canada, b] your name, c] the film title.
  • You must agree to have the film shown as part of a special screening [date to be determined]. You cannot see the film between it’s completion and its screening. The workprint and negative will be returned to you after the screening.
  • Prior to the screening, the film will not be shown to anybody other than cheyanne turions, Programs Manager + Curator. She will view it only for the purposes of preparing a program for the screening. If there are serious problems [ie: the majority of the film is significantly wrongly exposed and/or out of focus and/or the roll was loaded wrongly, causing significant registration problems], you will be notified of this problem, and are allowed the option to not have it screened.
  • If you have any questions, please contact cheyanne at cheyanne(at)cineworks.ca or 604.685.3841.

Directors Working with Actors

"Know your lines, hit your mark and don't bump into the furniture.” -Spencer Tracey

Well, that’s one way of looking at it. But not every actor works the same.

This two evening course is designed for emerging directors to help them develop their directorial communication skills with actors. The first evening is to discuss actor issues, methods and how to be more sensitive to the actors needs while still trying to “make their day.” Later, the directors will experience what actors go through in the audition process by auditioning themselves in front of the camera.

The second class, you will apply your directing skills utilizing professional actors, under the guidance of the facilitator, and directing them in scenes from established films. Afterwards, you will receive feedback from both the actors and facilitator.

Take the time, in this relaxed atmosphere, to learn about the different acting techniques you'll come across with actors - if any at all! Discuss the various issues that may arise including actors making the transition from stage to film, to the actor who has never set foot on a set before, to the professional who's been around the block a few times. The purpose of this course is to help improve the directors understanding of the actors process and the best way to communicate with them in order to get the best results for your film. Yes, time is money, but good acting can make all the difference in making a good film great!

Documentary Theory

FOR INDEPENDENT FILMMAKERS

This course will provide step-by-step guidance on documentary filmmaking in terms of theory, subject selection, legal issues, interview techniques, budgeting and funding. The weekend class is geared toward those interested in working on documentary projects and necessitates an understanding of the concepts involved in, and means of, starting the process.

The scope of approaches to making documentary films is constantly expanding and with these developments many questions to the core of documentary filmmaking come into question. This course challenges the traditional definitions of documentary and examines the ethics involved.

The course will also give a detailed practical look into documentary filming for advocacy purposes, as evidence, and associated research methods, as well as the task of defining whose truth the film represents and correlated questions of impartiality. From here, the course will explore documentary structures, set up, analysis and legal issues.  The course will provide role-playing in interview techniques and means of approaching those being interviewed in the film and how to form a connection with the interviewees.

What are the most economic means of editing the material? From that topic of economizing, the issue of funding a documentary project and different means of seeking funding, locally and internationally, will be explored. The course will also look into drafting budgets for documentaries and participants will be encouraged to draft their own budgets for discussion.

Participants are asked to submit a short background brief of their experience prior to the workshop outlining, specifically, what they want to learn from the course, as well detailing any experience they may have with documentary filmmaking or in the field of human rights.

Cinematic Stagecraft

WORKSHOPS IN PRODUCTION DESIGN FOR NEW FILMMAKERS

Is Rosemary’s Baby any relation to David Lynch’s Grandmother?

A script is a seedbed or a minefield or a map. Its outcome is a production committed to stages, either live or screened. This workshop takes you through the intuitive and methodical processes that connect words to vision.

Film design is both practical and conceptual. Using reading skills, analysis and discussion this workshop will apply useful methods and basic principles that can be used for any scale of project. The difference between a no-budget digital short and a feature film is a question of proportion.

Over the course of three sessions, with additional time for one-to-one consultation, participants will learn to:

  • break down a script into dynamic sets in practical locations and working studios
  • examine how an aesthetic design choice affects legal issues, including property and safety
  • communicate visual concepts verbally and by using picture
  • be creative within budget restraints

Participants may want to use this workshop as a pre-production planning session for a project already in development.

Grantwriting Demystified

GUIDANCE FOR INDEPENDENT MEDIA ARTISTS

Join instructors Peg Campbell and Walter Quan (from the BC Arts Council) as they delve into the domain of public funding for film and video projects, and grant writing for arts councils.

The morning session will see an overview of the kinds of funding available from the public sector for short films with up-to-date information on guidelines, expectations and application closing dates. The afternoon is hands-on as participants judge a set of three funding applications from a jury’s perspective. The participants will be divided into groups and evaluate the proposals in a mock jury style. After they have made their decisions the instructors will hold a post-mortem with the groups to discuss the results.

This workshop is a great way to see what the funders see in the many applications they receive so that you can make sure yours is among the few that stand out.

Working the Room

"The eye stops at the screen.

It is sheer fantasy to suppose that the mind can be equally obliging.”

–Sidney Peterson

In this workshop, the variously dimensioned spaces in the trajectory between the spectator and projected image, through lamplight, will be rediscovered as boundaries where work can be made. What is typically misunderstood as a conduit for narrative pathways will become the subject of a new relationship between the eye and the mechanical counterparts of cinema. Beginning with simple protocinematic devices like the phenakistascope, we will re-examine the limits from which stroboscopic experience yield a moving image.

After having re-invented the wheel, participants will cross the threshold leading to the 16mm projector. Beginning with the two dimensional emulsive film frame, participants will shift the line of light contained in the projector housing to experiment with how it behaves in the dimensions of the room. Meanwhile, the optical soundtrack will be offered as another path of entry into the dimensional space of a theatre.

The workshop, then, will explore the roots of cinematic experience as well as a theatrical enfilade for deliberate obstructions. Like the polar explorer whose destination lies where a directing compass indifferently respects all points of the horizon alike, these seminars will offer an imaginary wilderness in which to lose one’s own bearing in contingent tracts of intermittent light and concomitant sound. Stress will be given to the immediacy of possibility. Technological prerequisites will be de-emphasized in favour of physiological experience.

Cinematic Cartographies Workshop

CINEMATIC CARTOGRAPHIES
AN INTENSIVE HANDS-ON WORKSHOP AND SCREENING

Over the course of the Cinematic Cartographies workshop, participants will produce a video that explores the places where their own personal lives intersect the abstract maps of global capitalism. Part aesthetic exploration of film form, part activist practicum, this workshop will show one way of turning the observation of our immediate surroundings into a powerful way to engage with the seemingly disconnected contemporary problems and issues of our world.

Session one will look at examples of films and videos that propose their own maps at various scales from the very immediate [a building, a neighborhood] to the somewhat larger size of a city, and finally to the fully abstract mappings of nations and flows of global capital. These maps will highlight the odd sense of inclusion and exclusion made by invisible lines on the earth [state and national borders] and invisible webs of circulation–of goods, of money, of information–in which we are all enmeshed. After this introduction, students will go out into the city to find the places where their own maps intersect with these other bigger maps, exploring the connection between the local and the global via moving image documentation.

At the second session, we'll look at these various maps and begin the fast + furious work of editing them, to give them cinematic form.

In the third section, we'll look at rough cuts and discuss fine-tuning in preparation for the presentation of the works, which will take place on 05 May 2009 at 7:30pm at the Cineworks annex space in the Ironworks building.

Use of cameras and editing suites is included with the registration fee.

Bodies in Motion, Bodies at Rest

BODIES IN MOTION, BODIES AT REST
A DANCE FILM WORKSHOP WITH DANIEL CONRAD

Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society and the Dance Centre are excited to present a workshop for dancers, choreographers and filmmakers who want to make dance film–that is, they want to work with a truly hybrid form.

Most dance films try to film dance that was originally choreographed for stage. This usually fails: film cuts the world into shots from many angles, but stage-dance is made as a continuum from one angle. Going from stage to film must start with filmic choreography, montage, angles, camera movement, and locations. The best solutions are to re-choreograph a stage work for the camera, or to compose de-novo, in fragments with “sticky ends,” shot by shot. In both cases, the choreographer must understand film form. For example, time runs more quickly on film than on stage. Space changes too. A small movement, which on stage is subtle, can rush across the screen violently in a close-up.

A powerful non-stage approach to filming dance is to shoot in a location that is not normally associated with dance. These locations become dance partners, determining the repertoire of available movement. Other unstageable methods involve manipulating the camera with speed changes or superimposition.

All this and much more will be explained in the workshop, with films and film clips to watch, and some hands-on practice with camera, lights and a dancer.

The Art of the Short Film

HE ART OF THE SHORT FILM
AN EXPLORATORY WORKSHOP

This condensed course will explore the special characteristics of short films. Some technique will be discussed, particularly lighting and camerawork, but the focus will be on how to design a film that works as art.

The class will start with aesthetic principles (symmetry, complexity, harmony, dissonance, rhythm, concision, theme and variations). We will look at how early Russian filmmakers used montage as a means of expression–not just a way to move across a plot line, and how Sergei Eisentein made the cuts between shots as important as the shots themselves, creating what he called “ecstasy.”

Using film clips, we will explore how directors can achieve aesthetic power from cinematography, lighting, and sound; how narrative and non-narrative arcs are cut into scenes, the scenes cut into shots, and the shots rendered graphically (composition within the frame); how montage creates rhythm, meaning, and structure; and how visual shorthand establishes character or tone.

Finally, we will follow a typical production cycle, including writing, casting, shot lists, schedules, sets and locations, directing the cast, and post-production.

Grant Writing Demystified

GRANT WRITING DEMYSTIFIED

Join instructors Peg Campbell (from the Emily Carr Institute) and Walter Quan (from the BC Arts Council) as we delve into the domain of public funding for film and video projects, and grant writing for arts councils.

Space is limited, so sign up soon!

Applying Dramatic Structure to Documentary Film

The second lecture in a series, this seminar will cover the principles that lie behind dramatic three-act structure and uses examples such as Capturing the Friedmans to examine how these principles can be applied to documentary film.
Topics discussed include the nature and movement of dramatic acts, how dramatic units are combined to define the total structure, the different functions of major turning points and how character development and conflict carry viewers inescapably from start to finish. The emphasis will be on the practical and the seminar will outline an easily grasped method for filmmakers to use in moving from a basic three-act documentary structure.

Instructor: Don White has been a writer, director, producer, consultant, mentor, and teacher for over thirty years in the documentary film and video industries. He has written and/or directed drama, corporate, and major educational documentaries and has won over 20 international awards for film and video production.
